Gabeba Baderoon received a doctorate in English from UCT, with a thesis on images of Islam in South African media, literature and art. She has published widely on the topic of representations of Islam, and has lectured at universities in South Africa, Europe and the US. With Louise Green, she is the co-editor of a manuscript on citizenship, religion and identity that considers the case of Islam in South Africa. Baderoon is also completing a monograph titled Slavery, Islam and Making Race and Sex in South Africa. She is the recipient of a 2009 FMS/Mellon Fellowship, and teaches Women’s Studies and African and African American Studies at Pennsylvania State University. She has produced several poetry collections and read her works at a number of international festivals.
