Andrea Lewis was born and raised in Johannesburg. In 2004, she obtained an undergraduate degree (BA) in History of Art at the University College of London. After that, she acquired a Master’s degree from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. From 2006 to 2007 she worked at the South African Jewish Museum in Cape Town as a researcher and assistant curator, assisting with their art exhibitions, which included Irma Stern: Journey to the Interior and When Cape Art was Coffee with Joe. Andrea then became an Assistant Curator of Modern Painting and Sculpture at the Iziko South African National Gallery (ISANG), a position that she held from January 2008 to 2013. Since then, she has worked as a Curator of Prints and Drawings at the ISANG.
