Patron of the Journalist, veteran journalist Mathatha Tsedu, was recently appointed the Executive director of the SA National Editors Forum (SANEF). He is the former editor of City Press. Previous positions held include the Editor of the Sunday Times, deputy Chief Editor of SABC News, deputy Editor of The Star and the Sunday Independent.
Tsedu serves on the boards of the Council for the Advancement of the SA Constitution and the African Media Initiative (AMI). He was also project director for the Press Freedom Commission.
He is a Nieman Fellow and Mondi Shanduka lifetime achiever. In 2012 he was named the Print Media Fellow at the Sikuvile Standard Bank Newspaper Journalism Awards.
In a City Press article in 2012 he described growing up in a village in Limpopo. The now prolific media figure wanted to become a doctor but was unable to afford to register for his school exams. This saw him dropping out of school to start working as a gardener in order to register for high school.
He feels strongly about the role of journalists in South Africa saying:
“Media is about communicating the feelings, needs and concerns of the ruled. It is about service for the poor, voiceless and weak”.
